How To Use

Generic Singulair (Montelukast) is taken orally, usually once a day and with or without food. If you regularly take this medication for the ongoing treatment of asthma, you should take it in the evening. If you take it for the treatment of allergies, you can take it at any time of the day. If you are taking the pills to prevent asthma attacks due to exercise, you should take it at least 2 hours before exercising, but do not take extra medication if you are already taking Generic Singulair (Montelukast) on a daily basis. Increasing the recommended dosage could lead to a higher risk of side effects. Follow the instructions of your doctor exactly, even if they differ from the usually recommended dosage.

 

To enjoy the maximum benefits of Generic Singulair (Montelukast), you should take it regularly and at approximately the same time each day.

 

Overdose

Potential symptoms of a Generic Singulair (Montelukast) overdose include:

• Thirst
• Dilated pupils
• Drowsiness
• Inability to keep still
• Severe stomach pain

If you think you have taken too much of this medication, contact your local poison control center or the emergency medical services straightaway.

 

Missed Dose

If you have missed a dose of Generic Singulair (Montelukast), take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dosage, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double up on this medication to make up for a missed dose.

 

Notes

Generic Singulair (Montelukast) is only effective for the long-term treatment and prevention of asthma and should not be used for sudden attacks of breathing trouble, as it does not work immediately. If you suffer from asthma, ask your doctor to prescribe you a quick-relief medicine or inhaler. You should always carry an inhaler with you.

 

Do not share this medication with others as they may have a condition that is not effectively treated with Generic Singulair (Montelukast).

 

Storage

Store Generic Singulair (Montelukast) at room temperature (77 degrees F, 25 degrees C) and keep it away from light and moisture. Once finished, dispose of this medication in keeping with environmental laws. KEEP THIS AND ALL MEDICATIONS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Precautions

Drug Interactions

Before using Generic Singulair (Montelukast), tell your doctor about all other medication you are currently using, including:

• Other asthma medication
• Medications that stimulate liver metabolism (e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine)
• Rifamycin antibiotics (e.g. rifampin)

Inform your doctor of all other prescription and non-prescription medication you are using, including vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements, herbal pills and medication prescribed by other doctors. Common potential side effects of Generic Singulair (Montelukast) include:

• Unusual weakness
• Stomach upset
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Cough
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Trouble sleeping
• Mouth pain

These effects are usually mild and temporary. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if any of the above side effects persist or worsen.

 

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of these unlikely but serious side effects:

• Fever
• Persistent sore throat or earache
• Flu symptoms

Notify your doctor straightaway if you have any of the following highly unlikely but very serious side effects:

• Mental or mood changes (e.g. agitation, aggression, abnormal dreams, depression, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or suicide)
• Stomach pain
• Muscle aches or cramps
• Irregular heartbeat
• Dark urine
• Yellowing eyes and skin
• Numbness or tingling of the hands or feet
• Dull sense of touch
• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Swelling
• Seizures

In rare cases, you may experience a severe allergic reaction to Generic Singulair (Montelukast). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:

• Rash
• Itching or severe swelling (especially of the face, tongue or throat)
• Severe dizziness
• Trouble breathing

Talk to your doctor as soon as possible if your asthma symptoms worsen or if you need to use your inhaler more often than usual (4 or more puffs per day or more than 1 inhaler ever 8 weeks).

 

This is only a partial list and other side effects of Generic Singulair (Montelukast) may occur. Let your doctor know straightaway if you experience any side effects other than the ones mentioned above, especially if they are bothersome.
