How to UseGeneric Eldepryl (Selegiline) should be taken orally, usually twice a day, at breakfast and lunch. Try and avoid taking this medication later on in the day, as this may cause sleeping problems. Follow the instructions of your doctor exactly, even if they differ from the usually recommended dosage.
If you take Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) in combination with other anti-Parkinson’s medications, your doctor may advise you to lower the dosage of these additional medicines after 2-3 days.
Do not stop taking Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) without consulting your doctor first. If you stop taking this medication suddenly, it may cause your condition to get worse.
OverdosePotential symptoms of a Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) overdose include:
- Excitement
- Irritability
- Restlessness
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Drowsiness
- Flushing
- Sweating
- Fast heartbeat
- Headache
- Confusion
- Seizures
If you think you have taken too much Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline), contact your local poison control center or the emergency medical service immediately. Note that any of the above symptoms may appear up to 12 hours after taking the medication.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline), take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and then continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not try to make up for a missed dose by doubling up on this medication.
NotesGeneric Eldepryl (Selegiline) is not a cure for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, it merely helps improve the symptoms and slow down the progress of these conditions.
Some people suffering from Parkinson’s disease may be more at risk of developing skin cancer. Notify your doctor immediately if you notice any changes in existing moles or skin blemishes.
Do not share this medication with others, as they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline).
StorageStore Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) and away from heat and moisture. Once finished, dispose of this medication in keeping with environmental standards. KEEP THIS AND ALL OTHER MEDICATION OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

PrecautionsBefore taking Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline), inform your doctor of any relevant issues in your medical history, including:
- Any allergies
- A certain kind of adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma)
- Cerebrovascular diseases (e.g. stroke)
- Heart problems (e.g. congestive heart failure, heart attack, coronary artery disease, history of chest pain)
- High blood pressure or family history of high blood pressure
- History of severe or frequent headaches
- Peptic ulcers
- Bleeding problems
- Diabetes
- Personal or family history of mental or mood disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)
- Liver diseases
- Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
If you currently suffer or ever have suffered from any of the above, you may not be able to take Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) or you may need a dosage adjustment.
Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline), may cause dizziness or fainting. It is therefore advised that you do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are sure you can perform these activities safely.
Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) is classified as Pregnancy Category C by the FDA, which means it could harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication if you are currently pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future, unless you have discussed this with your doctor first.
It is not known whether Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) passes into breast milk. To avoid possible complications, it is advised not to breastfeed while taking this medication.
Drug Interactions
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor of all other medications you are currently using. The following medicines should not be combined with Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline):
- Antidepressants (e.g. TCAs such as amitriptyline or protriptyline, nefazodone, SSRIs such as fluoxetine, paroxetine or sertraline, venlafaxine)
- Appetite suppressants (e.g. diethylpropion, sibutramine)
- Medication for attention deficit disorder (e.g. atomoxetine, methylphenidate)
- Certain antihistamines (azatadine, carbetapentane, chlorpheniramine)
- Bronchodilators (e.g. albuterol, salmeterol)
- Bupropion
- Buspirone
- Carbamazepine
- Cyclobenzaprine
- Dextromethorphan
- Certain medicines for glaucoma (e.g. apraclonidine, brimonidine)
- Certain medicines for high blood pressure (e.g. guanethidine, methyldopa)
- Other MAO inhibitors (furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, rasagiline, procarbazine, tranylcypromine)
- Nasal decongestants (e.g. phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine)
- Certain narcotic medications (e.g. fentanyl, meperidine)
- Street drugs (e.g. MDMA or ecstasy, LSD, mescaline)
- Stimulants (e.g. amphetamines, ephedrine, epinephrine, phenylalanine)
- Tetrabenazine
- Certain migraine drugs (e.g. sumatriptan, rizatriptan)
- Tramadol
- Tyrosine
- Tryptophan
Combining any of the above medications with Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline) could have very harmful (and even fatal) effects. Also avoid taking these medicines two weeks before or after your treatment with Generic Eldepryl (Selegiline). There should be a five week period between treatments with Fluoxetine and Selegiline.
You should also notify your doctor if you are currently taking any of the following:
- Diabetes medication (e.g. glyburide, insulin)
- Medication for high blood pressure (e.g. beta blockers such as atenolol and clonidine, rauwolfia alkaloids such as reserpine or diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide)
- Herbal products (e.g. ginseng, ephedra or ma huang)
- Any medications containing dextromethorphan, decongestants or stimulants
While taking this medication, you will be required to follow a special diet low in tyramine to avoid a severe hypertension reaction. Foods that contain a high level of tyramine and should therefore be avoided, including:
- Aged cheeses (e.g. bleu, cheddar, parmesan)
- Dried, aged or fermented meats and sausages (e.g. salami, liverwurst)
- Preserved fish (e.g. pickled herring)
- Products containing large amounts of yeast (e.g. concentrated yeast extract, bouillon cubes, powdered soup or gravy, homemade or sourdough bread)
- Fermented foods (e.g. sauerkraut, kim chee)
- Most soybean products (e.g. soy sauce, tofu)
- Broad or fava beans
- Red wine
- Sherry
- Tap beers
- Vermouth
The following food stuffs contain moderate amounts of tyramine and their consumption should therefore be limited or avoided:
- Avocados
- Bananas
- Eggplant
- Green beans
- Raisins
- Raspberries
- Red plums
- Spinach
- Tomatoes
- Chocolate
- Cultured dairy products (e.g. buttermilk, yogurt, sour cream)
- Fish eggs
- Pate
- Peanuts
- Coffee
- Cola
- Alcohol-free beer
- Bottled beer
- Distilled spirits
- Port
- White wine
Notify your doctor immediately if you notice any symptoms of elevated blood pressure, such as:
- Unusually fast or slow heartbeat
- Vomiting
- Unexplained sweating
- Headache
- Chest pain
- Sudden vision changes
- Weakness on one side of the body
- Slurred speech

Notify your doctor of all other prescription and non-prescription medication you are currently taking, including vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements, herbal pills and medicines prescribed by other doctors. Do not start or stop taking any medication without discussing this with your doctor first.
